BOY SCOUT TROOP 868
MERIT BADGE UNIVERSITY 2009
Saturday, February 28, 2009
Bullitt Central High School in Shepherdsville, KY

The complete registration packet for MBU 2009 was posted to our web site late last night and is available for downloading.  http://www.bsatroop868.com/MBU.htm will take you directly to the MBU information page.  The hyperlink to download the Registration Packet is at the bottom of the page.

MBU 2009 promises to be bigger and better than ever.  Among the things that have changed (improved) from last year are:

  • More merit badge offerings --- a total of 66 different merit badge subjects
  • New merit badges --- American Heritage, Orienteering, and Skating will be offered for the first time
  • Returning merit badges --- Archery, Forestry, and Metalwork will be back this year
  • Move to Bullitt Central High School --- more classrooms, fewer off-site classes
  • Age restrictions for ALL Eagle-required MBs --- in order to promote quality instruction and insure space is available for senior scouts who really need to get into those courses
  • More badges can be completed --- changes have been made in several courses that will make it possible for scouts to complete more badges, start to finish, at MBU while still satisfying 100% of the published requirements
  • Elimination of "walk-in" and "on-site" registrations --- 100% of participants must be pre-registered so that we can get the program started smoothly and on schedule at 8:00 AM
  • Earlier registration deadline (cutoff date) --- so that we can give our counselors more accurate headcounts about how many students to expect in each of their classes
  • Increased fee for Individual Registrations --- to promote units coming to MBU as a group
  • Same Fee for Group Registrations --- so that participation in MBU will be affordable for every scout

All of these changes have been made based on feedback and suggestions from our counselors and scout leaders, like yourself, who have attended and participated in MBU in past years.  We do value your input and your assistance in making this program possible.  There is no way any one unit could possibly run this kind of program on its own.  We may orchestrate the logistics, but MBU is very much a cooperative effort.

This year we will be asking units, on the UNIT REGISTRATION FORM , to provide us with names and contact information for adults (leaders, parents) willing to help provide transportation for off-site classes, assist with our food service operation, or pitch in to help out in other ways.  Having this information in advance will enable our transportation manager to have drivers and vehicles lined up so that we can get scouts to their off-site locations and class field trips quickly and efficiently.  Providing this information is required in order for your unit to register at the Group Rate.

PRIVACY STATEMENT.   Troop 868 uses any contact information we obtain from MBU forms solely for the purpose of conducting and promoting the annual MBU program.  We NEVER share our database with any outside group or individual, Scouting-related or otherwise.   We respect your right to privacy.

Camp Crooked Creek

For those attending Camp Crooked Creek with other troops from the stake in week two (June 14-20) , the council has assigned us to camp site 11 .   You will need this information when paying your money.

Please carefully review the summer camp guidebook located at http://www.campcrookedcreek.org/info/guide/leadersguide.pdf

An excerpt from the guidebook reads: NOTE: You risk losing spaces in your campsite if you do not pay a $30 Early Bird deposits for each Scout by March 2nd.

Another section of the guidebook indicates that *Prior to camp troops may perform a swimming ability check on the youth and adults. This must be done under the assistance of a BSA lifeguard and been completed within 6 months of arriving at camp. CCC aquatics staff reserves the right to retest any youth or adult. (See Requirements ) Use form provided on Appendix B.

If you need to share adult leadership at camp, each ward / branch will need to make that arrangement with another troop from the stake.

To date, were are aware that Shepherdsville is planning on being in camp site 11, week 2.

Finally, if you have any Scouts / YM eligible to be tapped out for the Order of the Arrow, please check with your district order of the arrow election team to come to your troop meeting to conduct the election.  There will be a tap out ceremony at summer camp.
